The Ice Says “No More” to Year Round Football in Wisconsin Kenosha, Wisconsin - In a shocking yet bold move, the
WPFL’s Northern Ice takes a stand, and the season off to regroup
women’s football in Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s 2003 Championship women’s professional football
team, thinks its time someone takes a stand against year round tackle
football for women. The Wisconsin area has become saturated with secondary league football teams that operate in the spring. Players, some of which have never played a full contact sport before, are attempting to play in the spring, and then continue on to play for the Ice’s season. “We will not be a part of something that is diminishing the talent and professionalism of this sport. We won’t do that to the sport, the league, or to Wisconsin” Said Ice Co-Owner, Thea Cox. The Northern Ice held the 2003 WPFL Championship, and made it to the
Championship game in 2004. The spring team in Wisconsin only won 4 of
their 8 games, and had 129 points scored on them during those eight games
this season. The WPFL will be immediately releasing the schedule changes, and feel confident with the changes as well as the Ice’s decision. “This is why we have been the longest operating women’s professional sports league in the nation” Stated League Executive Director, Dawn Berndt. “We could keep putting teams on the map, just for the sake of saying we have the numbers, but we seek talent, quality, and longevity, and if one of our teams think this is in the best interest of the league, their area, and the sport then we support that decision 100%”. “Make no mistake; the Ice will be back in 2006” Added Berndt.
