The Stingrayz Make it Official and Withdraw From the 2005 Schedule San Francisco, CA – It was certainly not expected or done easily, but on Tuesday Morning, the management of the San Francisco Stingrayz notified the Women’s Professional Football League’s Executive Director, Dawn Berndt to announce their unfortunate withdraw from the 2005 schedule. “They were unable to overcome the loss to their roster after their accident” stated League Director, Dawn Berndt. In week two, the Stingrayz were in passenger vans on their way to Los Angeles to play the Amazons. One van transporting Stingrayz co-owner Denise Wrighting, and several of the teams players, had a blow out, forcing the van to overturn several times and stopped just feet away from a 600 foot ravine. Two members of the team were airlifted to a trauma center, and several others were sent by ambulance to area hospitals. “A number of our players are still not cleared to play because of the accident, and we just do not have the numbers to continue safely” stated Stingrayz team representative, Ellen Lewis. The league has made immediate schedule changes to accommodate the loss of the Stingrayz, and it will be released to the public by Friday, August 19th. “We would like to thank all of the fans of the WPFL, for their patience with the schedule changes this season”, stated Berndt. “Unfortunate things have happened, however we are still putting out the number one product in women’s football” added Berndt.
